Many people think the Bible says, “Money is the root of all evil.” That is not quite correct, it actually says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.”

A HUGE distinction. While it is important to plan and to practice habits that can generate healthy incomes, it doesn’t always work out that way. That’s why the focus can’t be on just accumulating wealth, but on what you are doing to accumulate wealth. A book written not too long ago was
entitled, “Do what you love and the money will flow.” And the key is going what you love.

Otherwise, it is easy to justify all kinds of activities that can generate a lot of income, but are not providing something of value to anyone; bank robbery, scams, and other unethical and illegal activities.

I do have to question one statement, Money is essential to happiness. If that is indeed the case, a huge percentage of the world’s population will never be happy. And from my experience that is just not the case. Happiness is a matter of your inner life. Families in “third-world” countries find happiness (as we do) in families, friends, making a contribution to other, seeing their children grow to be healthy and productive. None of which takes money. When you visit the mission field you find people living in true poverty, yet they happily share meals (which they cannot afford to do) with you as a visitor and are overjoyed to do that. We share out of our
abundance. They share out of their poverty.

Thanks for the focus on money and all you can do when you have it, Brian. May we not wait to do good until we have money, but look for ways to do it everyday with those around us.
