54% of American adults rank fear of public speaking higher than fear of death. The truth is, if you don’t know how to speak in public, you could be hurting your professional and personal life. Here are some tips to overcome that fear and improve your public speaking skills:

  • Practice your speech extensively. Write out your script and key points, but don’t practice it word for word. This will prepare you to answer any questions thrown at you.
  • Talk about a subject you really care about. Speaking about something you are passionate about will make you feel more comfortable because you’re speaking from the heart.
  • Practice even more. If you want to learn how to speak in public, Elbert Hubbard says, “Speak and speak, and speak and speak, and speak and speak and speak.”
